Triggering more than one task from the same event
Sep 6th, 2007, 5:26pm

Separating the functionality for the folder monitoring from the task to be performed would allow more than one task to be triggered by the same windows event. This would be a foolproof way of avoiding the problem described below.

On receipt of new files I need to send a notification email and move the file to a new folder. Following the advice in message "http://www.watchdirectory.net/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1143710598" I have set up two tasks and delayed the file copy (and delete) by 5 seconds to allow the email to be sent first. Unfortunately this does not work reliably and the file is sometimes removed before the email is sent. I have now increased the delay to 20 seconds and it is working OK so far.

The only way to reliably do this at the moment (if you don't want to use the technique described) is to "script it" yourself using the .bat file plugin.
For example, you can email from inside the script (see http://www.watchdirectory.net/wdhelp/plugins/wdopAutoRunBatEmail.html for an example), and it is quite trivial to ZIP files inside the script.
Running multiple tasks for 1 event is a good idea, but due to its complexity will have to wait until the next major release (v5).

I am considering purchasing this software but I will need the feature mentioned here.  When will v5 be available?  Thanks.

Hi,

At the moment work is underway for version 4.5 (see the beta forum for more info). I expect that 4.5 will be released by the end of December or the start of January. After that. work will start on version 5, I expect v5 will be released in March 2008.

Any new news on the availability of this functionality / new release?

It's frustrating to have all these plugins available but then having to recreate their functionality as a script because they can't be combined  Smiley

Thanks
Matthew

Hello Matthew,

There have been several delays with WatchDirectory (as you have noticed). The primary reason for this is that to be able to implement certain functionality, we have to switch the toolset we use to build WatchDirectory (compiler etcetera). As this is a major undertaking, we decided to first "experiment" by creating a new program with the new toolset (WatchFTP, released a few weeks ago).

We plan to have a somewhat important WatchDirectory release later this summer (includes the promised remote control center), and after that we start to work on v5.

Hope this answers your questions, sorry for the delays.
