Title: Speed up pdf printing
Post by paulbrookville on Oct 12th, 2007 at 11:01pm
I'm evaluating watch directory for it's ability to automatically print pdf files from a watched directory.  The speed of this process seems to be limited because Adobe reader is opened and then closed each time a group of files is added to the watched directory.  Best speed is about 10 seconds to start printing because of this action.  I need to speed this up.  Is there a way to keep Acrobat reader open to shorten the time between file creation and printing?  Thanks for your help!!!! :)

Hello Paul,

I will have a look later this weekend to see if I can tweak this behavior.

Hi Paul,

I did several tests, but could not get it to work reliable. However, on the beta forum ( http://www.watchdirectory.net/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1192104379 ) is a new release that includes a new plugin to "automatically start any program". If you download/install that new release, you can use that plugin to print your pdf's.

The settings I used for the plugin are as the picture below. Note that I used an extra delay of 15 seconds. If you remove that delay, and a lot of PDF's arrive in quick succession acrobat "loses" some of the print commands...

Gert,
Thank you for your very speedy response!  I downloaded the beta and tried it.  I found that I had to run both the automatic pdf print batch file and automatically start program function to print files as they were added one at a time to the watched folder.  Running both did shorten the printing time by approximately 3 seconds!  That's about as good as it will get because of drivers, network overhead, printer speed, etc.  I also found that if I simply started Adobe Reader outside of watch directory, that it would stay open and active while I was running the automatic batch print plugin and shorten the print time as well.

Thanks again for your help!  Watch Directory looks like it may be the solution that we're looking for.  I will pass my findings along to the decision makers!

Paul
