Title: HELP: Email plugin, HTML incline all new pictures
Post by mkanet on Sep 3rd, 2008 at 1:56am
I currently have the email plugin send me ONE combined email with multiple attached pictures that have been uploaded to a directory in a short period of time.

However, I am looking for a clever way to send 1 html email which inlines all the new pictures.

I know that you cannot combine emails when using html.  However, I am hoping I can get help to achieve any way possible to send just 1 html email with nicely formated inline pictures (new pictures uploaded in a short period of time).  Inline html email is very important for users of Outlook, Mobile phone email clients, and other email clients that do not automatically inline picture attachments!

This seems like it would be a very valuable feature!

Thanks so much for your help,
Michael

Hello Michael,

Sorry, the current implementation doesn't allow combined html email. I will give the issue some thought.

Thanks for looking into this Gert.  I think this feature could really add value to watchDirectory for users that use it for monitoring picture uploads.  Should I make an official feature request for this in the appropriate forum section; or will you remember it?

Michael,

I am having some trouble coming up with a way how combined html messages should reference the attached pictures.
The cid:message-root.N (where N is a number) is probably always 1 (cid:message-root.1) in your current html messages?

When 2 messages are combined (and 2 images attached), the wdpostman program needs to change the cid:message-root.1 of your second message to cid:message-root.2. This renumbering will be quite hard to do, I am afraid.

Something that will make this even more complex is if you also use the -attach filename feature.

Maybe I am overlooking some obvious simple way to implement this, thought I ask you if you have an idea.

Hi Gert, if you are certain that combining html emails to have cid:message-root.N (where N is the number of each new picture.jpg) is too hard/complex for you to implement.  I have another solution...

I am not sure if this is less complex, but make a completely separate "picture monitoring plugin".  It will monitor a directory for media files and send you a user definable html email showing new inline pictures that were uploaded in a pre-defined period of time.  It can include an html examples for displaying inline pictures in a simple column or get really fancy and show them as thumbnails :)

This would be a great feature for those people who have (for example) an ftp/html upload Internet site where family and friends upload pictures to them; or for pictures taken from a motion-detection security camera that uploads new pictures for a directory.

What do you think?

Actually, it is probably easier than I thought.

Instead of entering a fixed number (cid:message-root.1) in your html, enter something like cid:message-root.$, so the $ is a placeholder. That way, it should be relatively easy for the wdPostman program to parse and change them.

I will see if I can implement the above. There will probably be some limitations when "combining" html email....

Hi,

Please see the WD Beta forum for a beta that implements combined HTML emails.
Please read the post carefully, because it is (at this moment) an undocumented feature.
