Title: File Age Method  - Not sending email
Post by mtrover on Nov 2nd, 2011 at 12:08am
I have a file age monitoring setup -- to trigger for files older than five minutes to send an email.

I have DEBUG enabled and i get the email saying that "Debug is enabled."  So email is working.

Within the history viewer log file, on most of the files i got a message "*** file is old enough. Triggering event",  but i am not getting an email with the event.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks

Hi,

The first thing to check is to see if the emails are prepared. When a task creates an email it is not send directly but written as a plain-text file in a directory monitored by System.Mail (the wdPostman program).

Right-click System.Mail and view its history. Each email sent by System.Mail should have an entry in the History database.

System.Mail is running with no events or error messages in history other than startup messages. Test emails work fine from email setup.

If you right-click System.Mail and select "Explore ....." (some directory name), Windows Explorer opens the directory where ".wdmail" (and possibly ".wdmailcombine") files are written. Those are plain text files with emails waiting to be sent. If System.Mail is running properly, the directory should be empty most of the time.

There are 3 directories of interest:
...\System.Mail\Out - the directory described above
...\System.Mail\Sent - emails that are sent successfully
...\System.Mail\Fail - emails that could not be sent

You may also find *.log files which may contain more info why mail sending fails.

If all files end up in "Sent", it means System.Mail is running properly.

The only thing in the sent file directory is debug email messages that I am receiving when i start the task.

Can you please enable debug, make sure it should have detected at least one file and send me a backup of the task.

See http://blog-en.gdpsoftware.com/2010/06/send-task-backup-to-support.html

Please EMAIL me the backup.

Ok, I thought you were using the "Email" task, but you are in fact using the "Audit" task ( http://www.watchdirectory.net/wdhelp/plugins/wdopAuditInfo.html ).

It looks like you forgot to enable the email option, see picture.

By the way, I don't think saving files in the root of C:\ is a very good idea. Also, I think this is by default disabled on Win7 (which you are running, it seems).

I thought the email setting on the first screen was for some sort of audit file, not for notifications of files that meet the "old" criteria.

I had the email address setup under the "other" tab.    I guess i was hoping the alert would just send out an email with all the files that were too old. Looks like this generates an audit email like this:

If you want a normal email that you can configure for each file you should use the Email task:
