Title: Looking for a media renaming plugin
Post by mkanet on Jan 30th, 2012 at 5:35pm
We're now in a world where people download TV shows and movie files via video on demand download services such as Microsoft Zune.

I have been looking very hard for a simple media file renaming application which will rename my Movie and TV Show media files to standard IMDB Movie titles and Internet standard TV show names such as renaming something like "XZune-MS-mkanet-The.Event.s01e01.mkv" to "The Event - S01E01 - Pilot.mkv"

My media center software, SageTV, already has a free "directory monitoring" application called "SJQ" which has a groovy script plugin:
http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?p=523594&postcount=1072 that "might" do this.  However, I don't want to use two different directory monitoring applications.

I looked for different standalone media rename applications that run silently from command line; however, most of them are not smart enough to automatically rename both TV shows and Movies (and rename their respective folders) in one try.  I found one stand alone utility that does this; however, development has stopped in 2010; and, doesn't have proper command-line support:  http://code.google.com/p/mediarenamer/

Gert, you have always helped me with even my weirdest automation needs. :)  I am hoping maybe you might be able to help me figure out a solution.

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer.
Michael

Hello Michael,

I do not really see how this:
"XZune-MS-mkanet-The.Event.s01e01.mkv"
an be renamed to
"The Event - S01E01 - Pilot.mkv"

Where does the word "Pilot" come from?

Hi Gert, sorry I didn't realize what would be involved.  It would actually require significant work that's completely unrelated to watchDirectory....

scraping a few basic pieces of information "Season #, Episode #, Episode Title, Movie Title, Year" from IMDB.com.  Web-harvest is probably the easiest tool tool that points you to those resources.

Although this could be a generally useful plugin for anyone with TVshows and movies, this plugin would most likely be completely outside the area you are focused on developing.  Anyway, I thought maybe you might be interested.

Sorry, it does not seem like a good plugin (for customers) to create.

Perhaps you can try with imdb's own API: http://www.imdb.com/interfaces#win32

Gert, someone just released a very smart/powerful/lightweight media renaming tool.  It can be launched silently/automatically using WatchDirectory (just as if it were a WD plugin).  I have recommended anyone using this renaming tool to use it with WatchDirectory (I mentioned this on both AVSForum.com and SageTV.com).
