Plans for WD 2.1
Jun 12th, 2003 at 4:48am

Hi,

Just to inform you all of our plans with WD 2.1:
  • Run WD as a windows Service
This was actually planned for the 2.0 release, but did not make it.
The way I am implementing it means you will have the choice to run WD like you do now or run WD as a service.
  • Get rid of all the commandline options and use a settings-file
One idea is to put those settings in the actual bat-file (as REM statements) that is executed. You would then start watchDirectory as follows:
    Code:
    watchDirectory toExecute.bat

  • Add a tray-icon to the windows task-bar with some info on all running WD processes.
  • suggestions from you??

If all goes well, 2.1 will be out at the end of August or September.
Gert

Hi Gert,

Looks good to me.
Include a lot of comments / rem's in this setting-file.

Issue:
This setting.bat file is edible (in NotePad) and by the GUI (I presume).

Do NotePad edits feed-back to the GUI?

Hope to hear from you, Harry

Hi Gert,

Some suggestions for WD 2.1

- Could you be more specific about a RENAME of Files and Directories?

- Could you do something about DUPLICATE-FILES in the watched (sub-)directoyr?

Hope to hear from you, Harry

That is the idea.
After giving it some more thoughts my previous idea to have the settings stored as REM statements in the bat-file will be hard to implement (specially editing with the GUI).
Guess this settings-file will become a separate file...

Gert --

I just purchased your WatchDirectory and I am VERY glad that you plan on adding the "run WD as a windows service"  This is something that I'm sure users will take advantage of -- logging off the server/workstation and WD will still react to monitored directories/files.

I was wondering if you have tested using the srvany.exe utility in the Windows 2000 Resource Kit.  It allows you to turn most programs as a windows service.  If you know anyone who has done this, does it work?

I know coding it natively would be the better solution, but for those of us who just can't wait... Smiley

When I get questions/remarks about WD, one of them (almost) always concerns running as a service.

Up to now I have been focussing on getting WD2 more stable. Guess that point is reached.

Developement situation now (30-7-2003):
- System Tray functionality, 75% done (busy testing)
- Service functionality, proof of concept done.

I think WD2.1 will be released soon (next week?) with only the System Tray functionality added.

'Run as service' will be implemented after that. I already have the 'boilerplate code', so I don't expect much troubles implementing it. Probably done somewhere in August.

For those that can not wait and want to run WD as a service using tools as SrvAny (NT resource kit) or FireDaemon (http://www.firedaemon.com) I will make 2.0.5 available tomorrow or so.
I found the following info concerning SrvAny:
Quote:
For WIN32 Console (i.e. character-mode) applications: when the currently logged-in user is logging-off, all Console applications receive a CTRL_LOGOFF_EVENT event from the Console.
If your Console application has registered a Console event handler (via SetConsoleCtrlHandler), it must ignore CTRL_LOGOFF_EVENT in order to survive the logoff.

WD 2.0.4 (and before) quits upon receiving the CTRL_LOGOFF_EVENT. 2.0.5 will just ignore it when you pass the /r switch on the commandline.

Gert --

Sorry for not responding sooner.  I have tested using the /r switch and using Firedaemon to run WD as a service -- it works as advertised!!!

Thank you so much for implementing this work around for version 2.0.5.  This will work for what I'm using WD to do.  I will keep checking the site for the version that has the the built-in service functionality.

Again, thank you!!!  Grin

There is one problem when running WD as a service.

Running WD as a service normally means it runs 'under' the LocalSystem account. If you start another WD on the same machine using another account the second WD will think it is in Evaluation mode.

This is fixed in the 2.1 release (see the News forum).
