Version 2 of watchDirectory introduced Polling Mode.
If you start WD with the /p switch it will scan the monitored directory every 5 minutes for changes.
The reason for introducing this Polling Mode is to support network-drives (actually network software) that do not implement certain Windows features that are used by watchDirectory.

The polling interval that watchDirectory uses by default is 5 minutes. If you want to change this interval you should set the environment variable WD_POLLFREQ to the desired interval time in minutes before you start watchDirectory.
Starting with version 2.0.3 the variable WD_POLLFREQ is not used anymore. Instead you specify the polling frequency in seconds on the commandline: /p60 would cause WD to scan the directory every minute.

If you do NOT use polling, WD makes certain windows-calls that are not implemented by all network-software (causing error messages at startup of WD).
If you use polling WD will just scan the directory structure.

In theory this is possible.

However, I don't think Windows allows you to map 999 drives on 1 machine. Guess you would need at least 10 machines to do this mapping (=> 10 WD licenses). Maybe I am mistaken about this..

Just for the sake of argument, let's say it IS possible to map 999 drives to one machine. You must start a separate WD process for each directory you want to watch. If you decide to watch the 'root' directory of each disk that means you must start 999 WD processes.
Guess that will bring Windows to its knees...
So, again, you should splitup this work over multiple machines => multiple licenses.
