Create a new directory by using the first 4 letter
Mar 15th, 2006 at 1:03am

Just wanted to know fi it was possible to use watchDirectory to create a new dynamic directory by using the first 4(for example) letter/numbers of a file to create a new directory and store the file in the newly create directory.

Eg. File name is SMITH01.pdf -
watchdirectory to move to directory called SMIT\SMITH01.PDF

Thanks

Hi,

Yes, that is possible by using the following dynamic name (Auto Sort or Auto Copy plugin):

c:\temp\{left{4,{filename}}}\{filename}

if newfile.txt is processed, the above will expand to
c:\temp\newf\newfile.txt

and the "newf" directory will automatically be created.

Thanks for you speedy help.

Is there a list of function(e.g. left,right) that can be used in the application? I have looked through the help manual but didn't find anything.

Yes there is, it is cleverly hidden at the bottom of this page: http://www.watchdirectory.net/wdhelp/plugins/dynamicname_functions.html

While the dynamic name can be "build" using the popup-menu, you will have to manually add the functions.
