One process for a batch of files
Mar 30th, 2006 at 10:39pm

I am using watchdirectory to notify when files are posted to our FTP.  While there are times that one file (typically zip) is posted, there are other times when files are posted in large batches (maybe zip, or pdf).  These batches can be up to 700 files or more.  Currently the email alert is sent for every file which is a problem when we get 700 file batches.  How can I configure the application to send the alert 30 minutes after the last file is posted?  I tried to use the quiet feature, but then I get an email every 30 min.

Hello Phil,

If you are running the latest version (4.0.44), there is a "secret" option to combine emails. If you enable that, you will receive only one email for those 700 files. Note that when the next version of WD is released (4.0.45) this secret option will be replaced by a better implementation.

To enable combining email using watchDirectory 4.0.44

stop all your watchDirectory tasks
stop the wdPostMan program

start the watchDirectory Control Center
press CTRL+9 (this will open your task directory in explorer)
open the file "emailsettings.ini" using notepad
at the bottom of that file add the following line
combineEmail=10
save the file

inside the same directory, open the file YOURTASKNAME.config (replace YOURTASKNAME with the name of your email task) using notepad.
find the line that says
subject=.... (the subject you entered for the email task)
directly below this line add the following line:
enableCombined=1
save the file

stop the control center, start the control center, start the wdPostMan program again.

The effect of these settings is that email that is sent by this task will be delayed 10 seconds. All other email from this task with the same TO, CC and BCC addresses will be combined into one message. The subject line will be the subject from the "first" message, all attachments will be "combined" as well. individual messages are separated by a line of dashes (------------).

Do NOT set the delay (combineEmail) to high, because that can have the effect that no email is ever sent! When a message is combined, the delay period starts again for the combined message.

The next release will allow you to set the delay period for each task (now it is set for all tasks).

Gert:

Thanks, I have implemented your suggestion and am running some tests.  Is there any way to have the emails combine for each subdirectory rather than the entire drive without creating a million seperate tasks?

It is a bit of a hack, but like I said:
Quote:
All other email from this task with the same TO, CC and BCC addresses will be combined into one message.

So, if you make sure each sub-directory has its own (unique) TO-, CC-, BCC combination, their messages will only combine for the same directory.

To do this with one task, you need to enter the addresses using the @@address.txt syntax as described here: http://www.watchdirectory.net/wdhelp/plugins/wdopAutoEmail.html

That way, each directory has a unique combination of TO/CC/BCC.
