Copying to a Network Drive if it goes down
May 18th, 2006 at 8:43pm

Is there a way to make sure that any new files created in a monitored folder are copied to a network drive even if the server that the network drive is on goes down for a while? For instance, when the server that is recieving the copied files goes down and a file is created in the folder that is monitored, it does not have anywhere to copy the file to so therefore it is not copied.  However when the server comes back online, can you then set WD to copy the file automatically to the network drive? I know you can have the task check for previous files created but in my case i do not want all the files that are already in the drive to be copied...only new files from this point forward.

Hi,

I have been thinking about this (how to implement it), and I think I can add something to the automatically copy files plugin for that. It could maintain a kind of "todo list" for failed copies, or perhaps automatically adding the "new file event" to the scheduler database when the copy attempt fails.

I will upload an improved "auto copy" to the beta forum in the next few days (or maybe next week).

Hello Gert,

I have the same problem stated above.
I carefully checked for updates of WD (I’m using  watchDirectory Professional 4.8.7) but still did not find a solution yet. My use of WD is to copy new and changed files from a “source” folder to a “target” folder. WD is operating 365/24 on a Windows computer where the source folder is located on. The target, where the files have to be copied to is on a network drive. A problem is that this network can have outages (not planned) where it is not available. WD then detects new/changed files but can’t copy them (error code: 53 Description: The network path was not found. watchDirectory will continue)
Is there any solution available that WD keeps in mind the non-copied files and tries to copy them later again or do you have any other hint?

Thanks for an answer,
Lukas

Hello Lukas,

Currently this is just the way WD works. I will see if we can make this a little more robust.
