Ability to .ZIP pre-existing files?
Jun 19th, 2006 at 12:48am

Greetings,

While WatchDirectory seems to do a ton of things that I would need it to do. . . I have downloaded the trial (having been burned by buying things just because they seem cool before I even try them out in the past) and set it up to monitor a specific directory/subdirectories to compress files to another directory.  However, unless I've missed something, I do not see a way to run the task *on files that are already pre-existing*.
Think of how you can create a new mail filter in your email program, and run it on all your mail you previously have in your Inbox or wherever.
That is what I would like to do with my pre-existing files (over 5,000 of them) and then monitor those directories for future changes for compression purposes.

Is this possible, or is this a possibility for the (near) future?  Thanks in advanvce!

Hello,

To have watchDirectory react to existing files, use the option Fire FILENEW/DIRNEW events at startup. When you enable that option and start the task, it will scan the monitored directory and start your task for all files that exist in the directory tree.

Greetings Gert,

FILENEW is an option which is already checked under Edit Task>Events, but DIRNEW is greyed out, as are several other options.  Is this due to a limitation in the demo?  Or am I perhaps in the wrong place?  Thanks again for your fast response!

Those options are only available if the plugin itself supports them. For example, FILEDEL (a deleted file) does not make sense for the "automatically zip files" plugin, so FILEDEL is disabled when you select that plugin. If you select the email plugin, you may want an email when a file is deleted, so FILEDEL is enabled for that plugin.

I was talking about the option "Fire FILENEW/DIRNEW events at startup" on the "Other" tab ( http://www.watchdirectory.net/wdhelp/help/wdnewconfigpage6.html ).

Yay, perfect, this is exactly what I needed, It appears to work just as I envisioned.  Thanks for holding my hand through this.  This program really seems to rock!  A great idea for a time saver. . .
