Monitoring FTP Site
Sep 13th, 2006 at 3:55am

Hi Gert,

We spoke a while back about monitoring an FTP server/Folder and downloading any files that appeared in it.

You mentioned at the time that it may be something that could be put into WD.

Did this go ahead?

Cheers

Jim

I'm also interested in this feature.  Can you please let me know what the status is?

Thanks.

I'm also interested in this feature. Do you have a plug-in working for it?

Hi,

WatchDirectory is used to monitor directories for changes. To "natively" monitor FTP sites, would be quite hard to implement.

However, some customers use other software like WebDrive ( http://www.webdrive.com/ ) to "map" FTP sites to the computer. The mapped FTP-drive can then be monitored by watchDirectory using the "Polling" or "File Age" monitoring methods ( http://www.watchdirectory.net/wdhelp/help/wdnewconfigpage3.html ). The "Fast" and "Default" monitoring methods will not work with such drives.

Also if you use WebDrive in combination with a watchDirectory task that runs as a Windows Service ( http://www.watchdirectory.net/wdhelp/help/wdnewconfigpage8.html ), you need to make sure the webdrive is available to the Service. This is explained in the WebDrive manual (search for NT Service).

Note that if the FTP site has symbolic links, it may cause watchDirectory to "loop". For example the following structure

/root/realdir1
/root/realdir1/symbolic1 (linking to /root/realdir1)

will cause an endless loop while WD is scanning the directories....

Hope this helps,
Gert
