Sends a lot of email from the beginning of year
Sep 19th, 2007 at 6:56pm

I have a problem that now have occured twice for differnet kind of watchDirectory services that looks in a specifik diectory for newly created files and when a new file is created and it match a criteria the file should be sent to a specifik email adress! The problem is that twice the last week some of the services sends all the files that match the criteria that have been created in that folder.

The problem have newer before occured but twice the last week. The result is that i get a lot of questions from my cutomers and salesmen that recieve the emails.

It's a great application otherwise that saves a lot of work in my company!

Hi,

Sorry to hear about that..... Can you tell me:
* which monitoring method this task uses ( http://www.watchdirectory.net/wdhelp/help/wdnewconfigpage3.html )
* is this task monitoring a local drive (C:, D:) or a network drive?

It's using the defualt monitoring method and the files are on a network share!

There are about 5000 files in that directory for the moment and will probably be about 8000-9000 before the end of this year! The files are stored in diffrent folders for each year!

I have thougt about a possible solution that i create a other folder structure where only files that are created in one day are stored and then delete the files the next day.

That is one possibility (you can use the File Age monitoring method to detect files older than 24 hours, and use the "delete files" plugin).

Another option is to use (again) the File Age monitoring method, let it fire for files older than 1 minute (for example). If you also select the option "remember triggered files", it will start the task only once per file.

Getting back to the original problem.... I think what happens is that during the "scan" (WD is checking each directory for files), the network throws an error. WD is mistaking that error for "oh, the directory I am checking now is removed". The next time when WD is checking directories (and the network is fully functional again), WD sees the "new" directory (the one WD previously thought was removed) and WD starts the task for each file it finds.
I will have to do some debugging to confirm (and fix) this.

If i use the File Age Monitoring does this mean that all files that have been created to the folder that are older than a certain time will trigger? This then mean that a lot of e-mails will be sent if i change this to a service i already have and if there are a lot of old files!?

Good thinking! Yes, that's correct.

You may want to clean the directory first if you implement this.

Thank's for the qick answer to this case!

Hello,

We are also experiencing this problem, but only on one Watch Directory service.

We have 3 services which poll 3 different directories and send an email of the contents to our clients. Watch directory is running on a different server to these directories but the 3 directories are all on the same server.

All 3 jobs have been set up identically but one in particular occasionally reports the full contents of the folder.
I have recreated this job by copying one of the others and the same thing happened again a few weeks down the line.

All 3 folders have around 21000 files in them but the issue only happens with one of them.
They are all scheduled to run simultaneously.

We are still using version 4.5.5 professional. Is this an issue that has been fixed since?

Many Thanks,

Adam

Hello Adam,

Version 4.5.5 is from 2008, there have been a lot of fixes after that release. See http://www.watchdirectory.net/wdhelp/help/wdcc_version_history.html
Please download/install the latest evaluation version "on top" of your current install. That way it will "see" your tasks and registration info. 4.x releases are all free upgrades.

If you monitor a network drive, I advise you to use the "polling" or "file age" monitoring method. "Fast" and "Default" only work properly on (extremely) reliable networks.
