WD locks file permissions to user who runs WD
Jun 6th, 2008 at 1:04am

Been running fine without hiccups for ages now. I have a task running that copies all the files our engineering dept makes for me to publish on the web that copies them to a directory and then I integrate them into our website. I have been doing this task myself for ever since I have been using WD. I now have an offsider, he has full permissions to the directory the files are copied too but he is denied access to copy them. Even our sysadmin with god like permissions cannot copy the files, only I can. Sysadmin obviously has more power then me over the system and he unable to do anything with them.

I have edited changed the file security settings to both "allow everyone access to these files" and "inherit the security attributes..." and it makes no difference. I am not sure how long this has been happening as I was always doing the job myself.

I have upgraded to 4.5.3 and deleted the task and created it again, I still have the same troubles.

I have just backdated the syncpoint and get the following errors

Could not apply security attributes: 5 - Access is denied.

Date/Time: 6/06/2008 8:56:32 AM
Computer: WDEL0006

about 200 of em Sad

No-one can even open the .pdf's copied to the directory, I get "access denied" error when opening with Acrobat.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi,

Probably the file OWNER is not set correctly. Can you check one such file on that computer (so you are physically at that computer, not via a network share) while logged in as an Administrator.
Right-click the file
Select "Properties"
Select the "Security" tab
"Advanced" button
"Owner" tab

If you are logged in as a local administrator, you should be able to take ownership.

Having all sorts of troubles with WD now. I have completely uninstalled it, installed 4.5.4 and all has gone to pot Sad

I can no longer do anything that I was doing before, I cannot read or write any files off the server that I was quite happilly reading from before. I can't even set up a simple filter for copying files containing the word general or spares as I had done for ages.

Even running simple tasks on my own C: drive do not work at all anymore.

Is it possible to obtain a copy of the version I purchased originally on the 17 Apr 2007 ?

Hello Gareth,

Please contact me by email for a download link. However, I don't think running an older release will help, but you can try if you want.

I'll send you an email, I'll try anything at the moment. I have got copy from C: drive to C: drive working now, anything to my network drives doesn't work Sad It is a permission thing I am assuming but we have checked all that and nothing has changed Sad

Actually, you sent me a "PM" (so I have responded by "PM" as well).

By the way, on these network drives, were you copying to a network share or "directly" to the drive. The drive may be visible, but is normally not writable from a remote location.

Also, for shares, did you check the "permissions" of that share (check it on the server, where the share is defined). Modern Windows versions by default only allow read-only access to shares you create. You need to set "write" permissions explicitly.

Thanks for that Gert.

Unfortunately I don't have the power to check the permission on the drives, they are shares, my IT guy has checked them and assures me they are all ok. When I start WD I get the Init for monitor fails error straight away, seems WD can't even read the share, I am sure it is at my end Sad As I said before it was working flawlessly before.

Thinking out loud, could it be a firewall setting, if so what ports would I need to get checked ?

Gareth.

Well, I agree it is strange if it was working before. Do you know (can you ask your IT guy) if anything has changed? For example, did he upgrade from Win2000 to Win2003? I have heard rumors that shares can become read-only during that upgrade.
The default for Win2000 was for new shares to be "read/write", the default for Win2003 (or above) is "read-only".

Can you open Windows explorer and create/modify/delete files on the share?
Note that if your tasks run as a Service, they will by default run as the user "LocalSystem". As the name implies, this user can not access the network. If this is the problem, you can configure the task to use another userid/password:
* open the Windows Control Panel
* select "Administrative tasks"
* select "Services"
(or, instead of the above 3 steps, select WD's menu "tools -> Windows Services")
* search your task there, it will be named "watchDirectory:YourTaskName"
* change the userid for the service.

Firewalls have nothing to do with this (one of the few areas where they aren't causing problems yet).

Thanks Gert, I'll look into your suggestions shortly.

I can do anything on the share I want, it is our main CAD directory and we have 15 guys reading and writing to it on a daily basis. I have all our web pages there too, I can do whatever I like there aswell.

Hopefully we are going to find a solution soon.

Gareth.

After a few months of doing nothing I went back to WD last week. I was able to copy the files across fine, for an hour or so, then I would get the file permission errors again Sad I deleted WD completely and installed it again and I have had it running fine for the past few days, however I can no longer run it as a service, no biggy but it was nice to let WD run in the background and not have to remember to switch it on. I'll keep playing and see what I can find out.

This all sounds very strange to me. If it works (correct permissions) for a few hours, it should work "forever" unless something changes on the server.

One thing you can check with your IT department: I believe there exist "intrusion detection" software that will automatically block shares if someone (or some program) does a lot of read/writes to the share. These programs do have a "white list" capability for allowed software.
