Delivery receipt?
Aug 29th, 2008 at 6:35pm

Hi,

We are looking to purchase this program to monitor a specific directory and when a file is created in there, it will be sent to a list of users via email. The program works great, but we are looking for one more feature. Is it possible to do a delivery receipt so we know the recipients got the email?

Thanks,
Matt

Hello Matt,

First a note: as you may well know, return-receipts are not very reliable. A lot of people configure their email-client to ignore receipt requests.

But, if you still want to, here is how to do it.

Inside the WD Control Center, stop the "System.Mail" component - this is a special "task" that is responsible for sending all email.
Now select the menu "Tools -> Explore Task Directory". This opens Windows explorer in the directory with all your task settings.
Inside this directory, you will see a file called emailsettings.ini, open it with Notepad (do not use a rich editor like Word).

Scroll to the bottom of the file, and add the following 2 lines:
Code:
[strkeys]
str56=Disposition-Notification-To: <joe@example.com>

(obviously, change the email address to your own).
Save the file and start the System.Mail component again. Now every outgoing message will have the extra header line with the "Return Receipt Requested".

Hope this helps,
Gert

Thanks, worked like a charmed. One other question. How about a delivery receipt instead of a read receipt. Just so we know it made it to a particular persons server because yes, people do say no on read receipts, I know I do!

Thanks,
Matt

I looked around a bit to see what message header is needed for a delivery receipt (instead of a read receipt), but have failed to google it so far. If you happen to know the correct header you can enter it the same way as the previous one (using str56=.....).
The current release only supports one str56 entry (so you can only add one header). I will change the wdPostman program a bit for the next release so it will support multiple headers (probably by allowing str56_whatever=this, str56_somethingelse=that).

I guess you need this, instead of the above:

Code:
[strkeys]
str56=Return-Receipt-To: <joe@example.com>
