Security Issue on Copy Files
Mar 9th, 2009 at 10:10pm

Hello:  When I use dynamic naming to copy files and the target directory does not exist WDPro will create the new directory and apply the security detailed on the security tab to the directory however the files recorded below the directory has only my user as having access to the file.  The file itself never gets the security setting detailed on the security tab of the "Copy Files" plugin.

Hello Chris,

Please make sure to triple-check the domain & userid you enter, it sounds like they don't exist so the "set permission" fails. The domain/userid are *not* checked when you enter them on the "permissions" window.

Gert:  I tried every setting possible on the file security tab with no luck.  The newly created folder has "Everyone" for security but the file created within has the domain user of the system running watch directory only.  I tried adding the domain groups of "Everyone" and "Domain Users" but no luck.  I tried the option to get the security from the parent folder....no luck.  I have attached the job settings.  can you take a look?

wdpro runs on my domain account Cutter
It syncs 2 folders.  The source folder is on another users system and the target is a file server
The domain is a windows domain
the target folder runs on a windows 2003 server

Thank You
Chris

Hi Chris,

I just tried it at a Windows Domain without any problem. All the files got their permissions in a right way.
I had a similar problem (not with watchDirectrory) in the case a file has no owner. This sometimes happens with scanned file from a copier machine.
Please check if the pdf file you use has an owner. (Security->Advanced->Owner)

The issue remains  Huh  I have excluded any other systems from the scope of this test. Running WD pro on XP service pack III I am using the copy files plugin.  The task will move a file to a folder on a file server based on the first 2 digits of the filename.  The option "Dynamic name is a directory" is invoked.  If the folder does not exist on the target WD creates the folder with correct permissions but the file it records inside is limited to only "System" and "Domain user" being the user account WDPro is running on.  If I simply create the folder and copy the same file into the folder using exporer the file gets the correct permissions.  On the security tab of WDPro i set "Allow everyone" but even if I set the permissions on the security tab to a domain user the file will only get permission for the user account WDPro is running on.  I am attaching the job again and ask that you setup a shared folder on another system to match my job.  Again it is the folder and not the file recorded within the folder that is being effected by the wdpro security tab setting.  The file itself is limited to "system" and "user logged in"

Chris,

Looking inside the history database of your task, I see a warning
could not apply security attributes: access denied

Normally, only the owner can apply security attributes. Can you check the "owner" of the copied file?

Maybe this will work:
On a "higher" directory (one that is not dynamically created) set the permissions as you wish and tell it (using the Advanced button) to apply it to all containing files and (sub-)folders.
Set the task to do nothing for the security attributes, or if that doesn't work to "inherit from the containing folder"
