Possible ftp issue with 458
Apr 29th, 2009 at 10:10pm

Hi,

We recently upgraded to 4.5.8 however each time one of the servers we ftp to in a multiple ftp subtask is offline the whole task locks up and does not recover.  We have gone back to 4.5.6 and the issue appears to have gone away.

Thanks

Leo

Hello Leo,

Could it be that your virus-scanner/firewall is seeing a "changed executable that is trying to access the internet"? You may need to unblock wdrun.exe.

Gert,

The problem only happens with 4.5.8 when we go back to 4.5.6 problem goes away.  As said the issue is the task just locks when it looses connection to the FTP server. The issue is one of our live servers (the things WD FTPs to) had a fault that required it to be restarted. Under 4.5.6 not issue the job just carries on when the server is back under 4.5.8 it just hangs.

Regards

Leo

Sorry, no.

When you use the subtask plugin, the subtasks are run "in order" (one after the other). So if one FTP connection hangs, the whole task hangs. Normally, the FTP (sub)task will be able to reconnect when the FTP issue is resolved. However, there are rare times when the FTP code hangs inside the Windows libraries themself.

I dont think anything has changed between releases that explains differences in how this works.

Strange it only hangs with 458 it has not locked in earlier versions and does not lock now we have rolled back.

On a related issue it would be great if you could suspend a subtask if you know a server is going to be offline but want it to continue ftp'ing to the others in the task.  Even better if it kept a list of files to run against when that server comes back online.
