Upgrade to .net 4.0 causes wd control uninstall
Oct 13th, 2010 at 3:00pm

Hello:  Windows 2003 server... I had to install .net 4.0 and after rebooting the system when I launch WDControl center I get the message "Are you sure you want to completley uninstall watch directory and all of its components".

Any Idea why this happens?

Thank You
Chris

Hello Chris,

That sounds truly strange.

Can you check the properties of the icon you clicked to start the WD Control Center?
It should start the program
"C:\Program Files\WatchDirectory\wdcc.exe"
Without any parameters/commandline options.

What you describe sounds like it is starting "uninsXXX.exe" (where xxx is a number, typically 000).

I am not sure how this can happen, WD does not use any .NET component (it is a native-code C++ application).

Please consider running a CHKDSK on the drive.

Gert

The icons were pointing to the correct exe and I also tried launching control center from the program group with the same uninstall message.  Re-running setup corrected the issue with all my jobs still intact so I am thankful for that.  Yes I agree its strange but indeed true in my case.  I cannot recall if maybe I had applied some updates to watchdirectoy in the past in which I did not reboot.   :o

This is truly strange.

The WD Control Center (wdcc.exe) does not have ANY code in it that will prompt you to uninstall. Re-installing WD may seem to have fixed things FOR NOW, but I think something is messed up on your disk drive. I strongly encourage you to do a CHKDSK - your drive may be failing on you soon.

Right-click the drive, select properties, select tools, select "check disk"
(wording might be a little different)

Hi skacutter,

I just made some tests on my real Windows 2003 servers (x32 and x64), I cannot see the issue you reported. At both servers I could start the WatchDirectory Control-Center without any problems after installing .net 4.

A couple of months ago I saw something similar with total different application. When I started one them, a totally different application was started. I re-installed both ones and everythings was ok. I never found out what happened, but maybe the MTF table was corrupt or in MSI installer something was wrong.

As you are actually the only customer who has reported that strange behavior I do not think it is a common problem caused by WatchDirectory, but thanks for letting us know this.
