Tasks switching to not running
Jul 12th, 2011 at 12:26pm

Is there any set of conditions or settings that will cause tasks to switch themselves to not running?
We have some issues with network drop outs that seem to cause some of the tasks to enter a state of not running when we know that there has been no manual intervention.

Yes, this can happen if you watch a network drive and that drive is not reachable for a longer period of time. Mostly when the task is running as windows service.
You can set up a email warning in "Other" tab to get a warning when your watched folder is not reachable or you can use our "add on" tool WxRemote to remotly check your tasks and start/stop the tasks: http://www.gdpsoftware.com/en/wxtools/

These drop outs are momentary typically being less than 1 second but enough to affect our other applications if they are writing or polling netwok location at that time.
We do get warning emails of traversing directories off some of the watch directory tasks but those remain running while others seem to switch off without sending error emails.

You can try a different polling method to see if that helps.
Are those tasks running as Windows Services? If so you can try to restart the service automatically in Windows Services mmc.

No we have moved to the polling method as the fast method proved to not detcting new files 100%.
We have moved away from Windows services because we maxed out with other apps that were using the service.

Hmm, please send us a backup of one of the tasks with enabled debug when it happened next time.
See here for how to enable debug and backup a task:
http://blog-en.gdpsoftware.com/2010/06/send-task-backup-to-support.html

Maybe we can see something in the logs.
