Trying to use Microsoft Exchange as email server.  Always get a 'timed out' error.

Hi,

I guess you have Exchange properly configured so it allows SMTP access?

If the connection times out, it sounds like "something" is intercepting the communication. Could be a firewall or anti-virus. Make sure those allow wdcc.exe and wdpostman.exe to make those connections.

Please try to connect to your exchange from the same computer WatchDirectory is installed by using a telnet command:
telnet [name of your exchange server] [port]
Note that exchange uses port 587 for client-to-server connections and only accept connections from predefined users/computers and it must be encrypted (SMTP with TLS).
You can configure other connection types, this blog will help you:

Dirk,

If I look at that blogpost you mention, on the "Authentication" screenshot, it looks like the Exchange SMTP connector DOES support basic authentication WITHOUT TLS.

As WatchDirectory currently does NOT support TLS directly (for a work-around see http://blog-en.gdpsoftware.com/2009/02/gmail-as-your-smtp-server.html ) it is probably best to allow "Basic Authentication" without the TLS sub-option.

Gert, you are right, Exchange does support basic auth, but as default setting it is disabled. The admin needs to enable it manually. It is not recommend by MSFT to do so and you will have a periodly warning about it in Windows event log. Also you need to specify the 'senders' ip adress in Exchange config so that Exchange will accept those mails.
I have running WatchDirectory successfully wirh my Exchange 2007 and plain authentification.
