Trouble with UNC paths
Apr 13th, 2012 at 8:32pm

For purposes of example in this post, I have serverA which is a Windows 7 machine and serverB which is a Win 2008 R2 machine.

WatchDirectory is installed on serverA and I point the task at serverB where the RAR files are kept (I'm using the RAR plugin and have downloaded the unrarw32.exe into the \plugins directory) .  I address these with UNC paths for both the monitoring directory as well as the directory to place extracted files.  They are as follows:

\\serverB\working (Monitored directory)
\\serverB\working\extracted (Place where extracted files are placed)

It does not work.  The description for the task says "Uncompress RAR Files; Monitoring directory \\serverB\working" and the Last Message column says "FN - \\serverB\working\archive.rar"

I've tried some things I've seen in the forums such as disable UAC on serverA.  I added "EnableLinkedConnections" DWORD to the registry and tried using a mapped drive.  (I configured the Windows service to run as myself and mapped the drive as myself.  Also have allowed full permissions to the share and NTFS permissions on serverB).  I've also tried both realtime monitoring (I ran the test and everything passed) as well as interval monitoring of every 10 seconds.

This program is a slam dunk for what I need to do, just need to get the UNC paths to work.  I tested this by using local directories on serverA and it works perfect.

Hi,

Are you running this task as a Windows Service? Please try to set it to run "normal" first and also see this blog:
http://blog-en.gdpsoftware.com/2010/04/watchdirectory-tasks-as-windows-service.h...

If that doesn't help, please enable "debug" and let the task run until it should have detected a file. Then email me a backup of the task, see this blog for details:

Well I was able to get this working.  I went through your steps of running it in the normal mode, and noticed a popup box when trying to run it.  It was Winrar running the installation for the file unrarw32.exe.  I made the mistake of thinking that was the file needed for the plugin, when in fact I had to first run that to extract the unrar.exe.  Since I ran this as a service that popup would never appear.  Once I changed the path to point at the newly extracted unrar.exe file and ran it by right-clicking the task, Advanced, Run (and Detect all Current files once for this run) it worked with all existing files and now works in the realtime mode with the UNC path.

Thanks for the fast response.  I'll be seeking purchase approval for this-- very good tool.
