Moving WatchDirectory Installation
Jun 2nd, 2016 at 2:05pm

I am planning to move our test and live WatchDirectory installations from two servers located on our local site to a newly qualified data center.

I have a number of questions:

We plan to build two virtual servers (one for test and one for live). The planned operating system will be Windows Server 2012 R3, will WatchDirectory run OK on this OS? Will WatchDirectory install to the same folders as for Windows Server 2003?

How would I transfer our two licenses to these new installation? I plan to upgrade WatchDirectory from version 4.8.8 to the latest version as part of the migration.

Have you any thoughts on how I can easily demonstrate that the tasks that I developed and validated on version 4.8.8 run OK on the latest version? Can I assume that if they run without error messages in the history then they should function as they did in version 4.8.8?

Do you have a feel of what RAM would be needed to run up to (say) 30 tasks on a server?

Any advice on the above would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Tony

Hello Tony,

First make sure to read http://blog-en.gdpsoftware.com/2008/08/move-your-watchdirectory-install-to.html

Yes, WD runs on all current Windows releases.

It is hard to say how much ram is needed as each task is a separate process that runs. 30 tasks seems a bit much but should pose no real problem. A lower number of tasks is always better so make sure you also read this blogpost: http://blog-en.gdpsoftware.com/2009/05/how-many-tasks-does-watchdirectory.html

I assume there will be a short transition period when you have WD installed/running on the old and new servers. Do NOT enter the license info on the new servers yet but run them in "Evaluation" mode first (30 days). If you need more time email me for a 60-day trial key.
