Title: FTP Upload capped at 11-12 MB/s
Post by johnbeck on Nov 8th, 2023 at 10:39am
Hello Everyone,

I have noticed that the FTP (and SFTP) upload of WatchDirectory is capped at 11-12 MB/s.
I used for reference another FTP upload program, to upload the same amount photos (and megabytes) to the same three other FTP servers. There I got speeds between 20 and 45 MB/s.

I've attached a screenshot of the two transfers, the red on the right with from a conventional FTP program, the one on the left is WatchDirectory. As you can see WD stays capped at 11-12 MB/s. I'd like to buy WD, but if it stays capped it would be too slow for my purposes. I cannot find in the options a bandwidth limiting option. So what is causing this capping? Is it a bug? If so, can it be fixed soon in an update?

Hi,

I am not sure why you see such a big difference. The only thing that could interfere with uploading is the option "write FTP conversation to history" so make sure that is not set.

We will do a rewrite of the FTP task in the future (so not soon) using other FTP libraries that have excellent performance - we use them for our WatchFTP program. The main reason for the rewrite is so we can support public/private key logins for SFTP connections.

If you need a workaround now you can use WD's "Run any program" task instead. Use it to launch another FTP program that supports command line parameters so WD can start it for newly detected files.

Hope this helps.
