Unzip Permissions
Nov 9th, 2005 at 6:25pm

We use a service account to unzip files from one folderon ftp server  to another folder inside the dmz, this was working fine until recently. now after the files are unzipped I have to take ownership of them from the service account in order for the users to see the files(theay are tif images). ANy ideas, I have tried uninstalling the program and reinstalling it to no avail. I had ver 3.x and upgrade to 4.x, I am pretty sure it was still working but it might have broken when we upgraded. The service is on a production server so I cannot just reboot it.

I guess you are not using the unzip plugin but the bat file plugin .
The unzip plugin doesn't do anything special for permissions, so if you are running it using the default service account (LocalSystem) I think you will have some permission issues if other users need to access the files.
If you use the .bat file plugin, you can always use tools like SetAcl to set the permissions automatically. Or, use the unzip plugin to unzip, and the .bat file plugin on the target computer to SetAcl the unzipped files.

[watchDirectoryMoniMethod]

[watchDirectoryMasks]
type=1

[watchDirectoryRunAs]

Not sure, but whenever watchdirectory unzips a file, no one can access it till I take ownership of it. We use a service account that has domain admin rights on all the directories we watch.

I am experimenting with file-security for the unzipped files now. Contact me at the e-mail address in my signature if you want to test.

I have tested it out and it is a permissions issue, only Domain Admins can open the files. Any other user though they have full controll cannot open the file. They get an access denied error. We have reviewed our GPO's and other security settings and can find no problems where they would cause this issue.

After Spending a couple of hours with microsoft we tracked the proble down to If you check the use the same subfolder as where the ZIP file is Found and or the Use the Directory Information found Inside the zip file. Then the extrated file blocks inheriting the folder permissions and only lets system users or administrators access the sub directories. If you give a regular user permissions to a file then suddenly the file inherits all the permissions from above. This basicaly makes the program useless to us right now and I have production users that need it asap.
