Email plugin not sending messages to wdNofify

Perhaps, I am doing something wrong. But, when I use the email plugin with the combined feature, wdNotify will not show these messages. Currently I have to create a completely new task such as the Audit Directories plugin to see messages in WdNotify. I have already selected the Enable wdNotify messages for the task (see Help!) feature (in the email plugin), but its completely ignored!

Okay. I guess I dont understand. I currently only have two plugins in watchDirectory. I have the "System Mail" and "Email plugin" installed. I have the Email plugin (send combined email messages). How do I get messages to send using the email plugin? I already have the option for wdNotify enabled... and have the professional version installed and registered... but no messages!

The only way I can make this work is to add an entirely new plugin like the "Audit Directories" plugin and enable the wdNofity in that plugin; which I dont want to waste system resources for a completely separate plugin for same information.

Now you got me confused as well. In a previous post you mentioned email is working, correct? So when WD detects a new file you receive an email (after the delay you have set for "combine emails").

The wdNotify tool has nothing to do with email, and is just an add-on to WD. Please read the description (and see the screenshots, hope they clarify it a bit) of wdNotify here:

Yes, that's absolutely correct; and, I understand from your last statement that wdNotify grabs messages before the email plugin even starts to generate a combined email.

HOWEVER... what I am saying, in the email plugin configuration options, when I have the below option (look at picture) enabled, I do NOT get wdnotify messages.... nothing shows up in the wdnotify history. I need help to troubleshoot and determine why the messages are not sent to wdnofity.

OK, a few questions / remarks...

You do realize that wdNotify only shows messages for tasks that run on the "local" machine? So you can not see messages from tasks running on other computers.

What operating system is this running on? I will have to investigate this, but I think there might be issues on Vista and 2008 due to elevation and privileges.

I only have one computer. It's local. I am using Vista SP1. I am part of the local administrator group which has full permissions to interactively work with the operating system. Also I have already disabled UAC.

I really would like this to work, because I already installed it and part of the reason for buying this product. Please let me know if you need any kind of debugging information, logs, etc.

Disabling UAC will not prevent other security enhancements that MS implemented in Visa. One of these enhancements is that 2 programs that are running in different security contexts (started by different users) can not easily "talk" to each other.

I assume your WD task is running as a Service?

Can you try (as an experiment) if it works if you run the task "normal" (not as a service)?

Gert, you are 100% correct. If change the task to run "not" as a service, wdnotify displays the messages.

However, I need to have it running as a service; because sometimes I'm not logged into my machine. But, when I login, I want to see wdnotify's messages. Can you fix this problem so that WD/wdnotify is fully Vista compatible? I would prefer not to run wdnotify as a service since I only need it when I'm logged in.

PS: Is there a way to make wdnotify's text smaller (change font size). It look VERY big on my display.

Actually, this isn't about compatibility of WD/wdNotify. Microsoft did very hard work to implement extra security in Vista. One of the security measures they implemented was that 2 programs that are started by different users can not "influence" each other. The way WD "talks to" wdNotify is one of those restricted communication methods. A future version will address this, but it may take a while.

Okay, the previous experiment showed that it works if the task and wdnotify run in the same security context. Next experiment:
Set the task to run as a Service again, but do not start the task yet.
Open the Windows Control Panel
Administrative tasks
Services
Find the service called "watchDirectory:YourTaskName" (replace with the name of your task)
Edit its settings, change the "user" from the default to the same userid/password you use to login to your Vista box.

Doing the above will make sure that both programs (your WatchDirectory service and wdNotify) are started by the same user.

Hi I running wdNotify.exe and wdRun.exe (service) as the same user (with full permissions). wdPostman.exe is running as SYSTEM. Unfortunately, this doesn't work. Maybe it's a better idea for you to test WD and WDNotify on Vista for future releases?

Also, wdNotify's OSD text is too big in my opinion. It would be nice if the user can specify font size... even through registry at least.

Is there any other way to make this work?
