WDRUN.EXE causing High CPU

Hello,
I've been running Watch Directory Pro for several years now without any issues. However, about 6 weeks ago WDRUN.exe has been keeping my CPU running @ 100%. I have 9 e-mail notify services running, when all are stopped the CPU will stay @ ~25%. Starting a single service puts the cpu @70% with spikes to 100% every 3 seconds. By the time I have 4 services running the CPU never gets a break and just stays @ 100%. I've tried installing the latest version and Installing WD on another server, still getting the same results. Both servers at 2003 w/ SP2. Any idea on what can be causing this?

Hi,

Can you confirm it is wdrun.exe consuming the CPU (look in Windows task manager, processes tab). That really seems strange. Can you check the task directories of those tasks? Assuming a task called HELLO, select the menu "Tools -> Explore task directory" (opens Windows Explorer), now open the sub-directory called HELLO (the name of your task). You will find a file called history.db there. Is it exceptionally large? More than a few megabytes? Check this for your other tasks as well.

If it is wdPostman.exe (the System.Mail component) it may be it is "stuck" on a message in its out-box. If all your normal tasks are stopped (causing no new email) and you let System.Mail run for a while, its out-box should be empty. Right-click System.Mail and select "Explore .... ". This opens Windows Explorer in the directory where outgoing emails are stored. It should be empty (maybe a dummy.log file).

mmm, very strange.

I know lots of customers use Win2003/SP2 so I don't think it is an issue specific to that operating system. Perhaps a virus-scanner or other kind of "monitoring tool" is "fighting" with WD?

Do you still have it installed on the Win2003? I would like to see one of those task's settings and history:
* right click the task (a popup menu opens)
* select backup task
* email me the ZIP this creates

I'm having this same issue, running 4.6.7 code on server 2k3 SP2

I've been running this for a while and never an issue. I have 10 tasks running, the history files are all fairly small around 80kb range.

About a week or two ago I started having issues with the wdrun.exe eating up all the cpu resources untill which point i pretty much had to hard boot the server unless I catch it soon enough to stop the WD services. I have confirmed it is for sure the wdrun.exe service without a doubt.

it doesn't do this constantly, it will run ok for a while but it seems to be doing this almost every day maybe every other day now. I love the program but this is killing me. Would love any help in finding a solution. Thanks!

A lot of customers run WD on 2k3, so I don't think it is caused by the operating system. Can you tell me which "monitoring method" you are using?

I would like to see one of those tasks, can you - stop the task - edit it (change your userid/password on the FTP settings) - right-click it (a popup menu shows) - select the menu-item "backup selected task" please email me the zip (probably best not to attach it here).

jdixon YaBB Newbies Offline Posts: 4	Re: WDRUN.EXE causing High CPU Reply #8 - Aug 28^th, 2012 at 9:30pm i went in earlier today and made an exclusion on symantec av for wdrun.exe. so far the CPU hasn't spiked up like before but it's run ok for decent periods before, so i'm going to keep an eye on it for a little while and see if that helps. If we're lucky maybe that will resolve the issue. I'll let you know what I find

However, normally AV programs either cause "no problem" or they cause WD not to work at all with not much in between. Please let us know when you have some results.

Depends on what the problem is. Also, how high is the cpu usage? And is it only high when a file is detected/processed by the task or "all the time"?
Can you send me a backup of the task that is causing the high cpu so I can have a look?

Cpu Usage of each wdrun.exe is ~25% , i have 17 tasks , realtime folder monitoring , high cpu is all the time . i have backuped task and its size iz more than 800 Kb , how can i send it to you ?

If it is only 800kb you can email it to me, see my signature for my email address.

If you mean 800 MEGABYTES..... that should not happen and is likely the cause of the cpu issue.
Stop the task
Go to "View -> Options -> History"
Set "How long should history be kept" to (for example) "2 days".
Edit the task, "Other settings", make sure "write debug messages" is off.
Right-click the task, on the popup menu select "Advanced" and then "Compact history database".
