Audit Plugin Error Messages

Hi Gert,

I am trying to use the Audit Plugin to audit for file deletions on a data share.

I am experiencing error messages from WatchDirectory (see screenshots in the linked Word Document).

It seems that the auditing is switched on and configured correctly for the file server.

I think we solved the permissions issue but we are now getting a different error message.

'buffer too small (unexpected), buffer currently is 4096 bytes, windows wants 4760 bytes'

Please advise,

Hello Tony,

I somehow missed your earlier post, sorry for that.

That is a strange error, not really sure what happens. When WD wants to read "the next record" in the security log, what basically happens is this:

WD asks windows: how big (how many bytes) is the next record?
Windows responds: the next record is xxx bytes.
WD allocates some memory to hold the next record (xxx bytes).
WD tells Windows, here is xxx bytes of memory, please give me the next security log record.
Windows replies: sorry, the record will not fit in that piece of memory.....

Somewhere next week we will have a new beta. I will see if we can make the initial memory buffer bigger.

Please let me know when this beta is available.

I would be keen to test this out ASAP.

I have just tested this plugin again from a WatchDirectory server that is on the same network to the file server that we are trying to monitor (the other server was on a separate but connected network).

I still get the same type of error.

'buffer too small (unexpected), buffer currently is 4096 bytes, windows wants 6684 bytes'

I think we have discovered what the issue might be.

The Audit plugin works as expected when monitoring a data share that is on a file server with Windows 2012 OS. I have tested it on two different Windows 2012 file servers and it works well. I was using the Windows 2008 option within the plugin.

The file server that does not work with the plugin has a Windows 2016 OS which I expect is not supported with WatchDirectory version 4.8.8 (our validated version).

Do you have any plans to make the Audit (and other) plugin(s) compatible with Windows 2012 and Windows 2016 file servers?

Please advise.

Actually, the "operating system" option was introduced when Microsoft implemented a completely different way of event logging. I think it was introduced when Vista or "7" came out, not sure anymore.

I have checked earlier, Win2012 and 2016 use the same "new" logging so it should work fine. To avoid confusion, we will add the newer operating systems in the selection box.

Also planned is to have a default buffer size of 32k or 64k which should be more than enough to read all event log records without having to reallocate memory.

We have been busy moving our websites to https the last weeks which proved to be a bit more difficult than thought before. We hope to finish that today or this weekend. After that work on the next minor release of WD will begin, hope to have a beta for you somewhere next week.

Any news on the release of the beta version of WatchDirectory?

Interestingly, we had a Windows 2012 file serve built and the Audit Plugin works fine with this file server.

Any news on when the beta version of WatchDirectory will be available for testing?

As you know, the audit task works fine on our Windows 2012 server but ideally we would like to run our file servers on Windows 2016 so that they will have a longer support life.

Thank you for your response. I know you have a life outside of WatchDirectory.  Smiley.

Assuming that the beta version fixes the Windows 2016 buffer issue, how far way would the beta version be from you releasing it as the next version.

As you can appreciate, we cannot implement a beta version of an application in our company.

Looking at the specific error messages (one of the posts above), it is quite a strange issue. Windows first saying "I need X bytes of memory", WD saying "ok, here is X bytes" and then Windows responding "but I need X+9999 bytes of memory!".

I couldn't find anything related to this (on the internet or MS knowledge base). What we plan to do is to always give a huge buffer to Windows (something like 128000 bytes), far bigger than the typical buffer needed (several hundred bytes or a few kb).

I hope you can test the beta as we have not seen this behavior before (and you are the only one reporting it).

Anyway, we are in the final stages with a few fixes/features for the next "official" release. We plan one last beta (including this new thingy for the audit plugin) before we release. If all goes as planned the beta will be "soon", the release somewhere next month.

Re: the licence order, I have chased this up with our Finance group and have discovered even though the status in our Purchase system stated that the order had been paid, it actually had not been Sad.
