Using explicit FTPS with "AUTH TLS" over port 21
Apr 13th, 2026 at 12:03pm

Hello everyone,

first time poster here 👋🏼.

I would like to upload files to an FTP server that uses "explicit TLS". This means the connection is established on port 21. After connection, the client sends "AUTH TLS" and then both the client and server switch to an encrypted (TLS) connection.

"Implicit FTPS" means the connection is established on port 990, where TLS is used right away.

I have found the description at https://www.watchdirectory.net/wdhelp/plugins/wdopAutoFtp.html, which confused me – it says port 990 is used also for explicit FTPS.

Is that a documentation glitch only? Can I override the port to be 21 and WatchDirectory will send the "AUTH TLS" command as expected?

Hello Matthias,

You can enter any port you want. The ports mentioned in the documentation is the most-used port. These days a lot of admins change the port number for a slight protection improvement and ease of maintenance.
Should work fine if you enter port 21.
